Debra Silva Rivera grew up in Brooklyn with one foot in Puerto Rican traditions and the other in the U.S mainland. Early experiences of moving frequently gave her the confidence to meet and make friends wherever she lived.
A middle school class trip to the Williamsburg Public Library changed Debra’s life. She fell in love with reading. No matter where she moved, she had books full of stories and adventures onto which she could hold and cherish. When she was not reading, she wrote stories which she shared with her siblings.
After high school she attended State University of New York in Binghamton, Cortland and Oneonta and earned degrees in Counseling Education and School Administration. For over 25 years she worked as a Guidance Counselor and Administrator in public schools in upstate New York. Debra belongs to a local writing group. Selected in 2013 and 2015, Debra attended VONA (Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation), a summer writing workshop co-founded by Pulitzer Prize Fiction writer, Junot Diaz. Also, in the summer of 2017 she was selected and attended Las Dos Brujas writing workshop in San Francisco. She writes stories and lives with her family in Ithaca, New York.
